# The Blood of Dawnwalker review deep dive

**September 4, 2026 · Perthro**

The Blood of Dawnwalker is the first game from Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio led by veterans of The Witcher 3, and The Blood of Dawnwalker reviews have been kind. It sits at 83 on Metacritic for PS5 and 84 on PC, with nine in ten critics positive. The praise is for the writing and the choices. The arguments are about two things: whether its 30-day clock actually bites, and whether the combat holds up for the whole run.

If you only read one line: critics think this is a strong, focused RPG with a great story, held back by repetitive fights and rough performance. How much the clock matters depends on who you ask.

## The Blood of Dawnwalker review scores: 83 on Metacritic

The Blood of Dawnwalker launched on September 3, 2026 on PS5, PC and Xbox Series X/S, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It's $69.99 on Steam. Reviews went live on August 31.

Metacritic lists it at 83 on PS5 from 72 critics, 84 on PC from 49 and 84 on Xbox Series X from 10, with 90% of reviews positive and none negative. OpenCritic's Top Critic Average is 84 from more than 150 critics, and 94% recommend it.

You play Coen, a "Dawnwalker" who is human by day and vampire by night, in Vale Sangora, a fictional 14th-century valley in the Carpathians under the rule of a vampire lord. You have 30 in-game days to save your family. The clock doesn't tick while you explore. Instead, major quests and key actions each use up part of a day, so every job you take is a job you're not doing elsewhere.

### What critics love about The Blood of Dawnwalker

The writing comes first in nearly every review. IGN's Travis Northup (9/10) praises "a story filled with memorable characters, gut wrenching decisions, and more endings than I'm ever likely to see." Wccftech (9/10) credits its "fantastic writing," and Eurogamer's Robert Purchese (4/5) calls it a familiar dark fantasy adventure with "bold and provocative ideas of its own." Destructoid's 95 goes furthest, calling it "the perfect game in almost every conceivable way."

The size is the other big selling point. VGC's Jordan Middler (4/5) says the game "shines as an example of the genre that doesn't go big for the sake of it," and calls it an RPG with "no filler." After years of open worlds that take 100 hours to finish, a lot of critics clearly welcomed a smaller map with denser choices.

For its fans, the clock is what makes those choices matter. Northup calls the time limits "one of the coolest, most wonderfully stressful parts of the adventure." PCGamesN (9/10) says "it inflicts weight on every decision with its time mechanics, yet still lends you enough freedom," and Shacknews (9/10) says "the clock is ever-ticking, and the results of our actions and words have real consequences."

### Where Dawnwalker reviews split: the clock and the combat

Not everyone felt the pressure. VGC calls the time system "far from strict," saying that outside a few clearly flagged timed quests, the clock "didn't massively impact my experience." Game Informer's Diego Nicolás Argüello (7/10) found that "the time pressure progressively eroded the closer I got to the end." GamesRadar+ says the game "feels too frictionless and forgiving" once you get used to it. Game Rant (6/10) had a different problem: so many small actions cost time, in its view without much logic, that the reviewer "eventually stopped caring about it altogether."

The day/night split draws similar notes. By day Coen is a swordsman who can talk to townsfolk. By night he gets vampire powers and new ways to move, but has to manage his blood hunger. Game Informer likes the idea but says it lacks friction: hunger is tied to health, so failing to feed rarely costs you much.

Combat is the bigger fault line. IGN says it has a learning curve but "gets under your skin in all the right ways once you get the hang of it," and VGC felt rewarded for "chaining parries together." Game Informer sees the opposite: enemies repeat movesets and fights outside boss battles turn into "repetitive Simon Says sequences." Game Rant feels "a real weight behind every swing" but says limited enemy variety wears it down, and sums up the game as "strong ideas and a compelling story" held back by "repetitive design, uneven systems, and constant jank."

Performance comes up too. VGC reports "a choppy frame rate and more than a shrug-offable number of bugs" on PS5. Rebel Wolves promised a 60fps performance mode as a day-one patch on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X after players pushed back on the 30fps-only footage; Xbox Series S stays at 30fps.

> 💡 The critics who loved the clock and the critics who shrugged at it agree on one thing: it forces you to pick. Treat each day as a budget, not a timer, and you'll see why it works.

## Should you play The Blood of Dawnwalker?

Play it if you want a story-first RPG in the Witcher 3 mould that respects your time. The consensus is that Rebel Wolves wrote a great cast, built real choices and kept the map tight. If you came away from our [August preview roundup](/blog/2026-08-07-onimusha-blood-of-dawnwalker-star-wars-zero-company-preview-roundup) curious about the 30-day system, the reviews say it's the most interesting thing about the game, even if it's gentler than advertised.

| If you want | What critics say |
| --- | --- |
| Writing and choices | The clear strength, praised even in the lowest scores |
| Real time pressure | Split: tense for IGN and Shacknews, loose for VGC and GamesRadar+ |
| Deep combat | Split: rewarding once learned, or repetitive by the midgame |
| Smooth performance | Rough in PS5 review builds; 60fps mode on PS5 and Series X only |

Wait for patches if frame rate or bugs ruin a game for you, especially on Xbox Series S. And if you want an action game first and an RPG second, the combat criticism from Game Informer and Game Rant is the part to take seriously.

Length depends on how you spend your days, since every quest draws on the same 30-day budget and you won't see everything in one run. That makes it a game worth writing a few notes about as you go. We keep ours in [Perthro](https://apps.apple.com/app/perthro/id6764673686), which is handy for remembering who you helped and who you left behind before a second playthrough. If you're coming back to the genre from The Witcher 3 itself, our piece on [returning to an old save](/blog/2026-05-28-old-save-calling-you-back) has some thoughts on that, and [Moonlighter 2](/blog/2026-09-03-moonlighter-2-the-endless-vault-review-deep-dive) is this week's other well-reviewed release if you want something lighter.
