# Why game delays are usually good news

**October 5, 2026 · Perthro**

Few announcements disappoint players faster than a delay. A date you'd circled moves, sometimes by months, and the game you were looking forward to is suddenly much further away.

GTA 6 is the year's biggest example. Rockstar was aiming for fall 2025, moved it to May 26, 2026, and then to November 19, 2026. Each announcement landed as bad news. But look back at the big delays of recent years and a pattern appears: when a studio moves a major game by months to polish it, the result is usually better for it. The data on small, routine slips is less flattering, and we'll get to that too.

## Notable game delays and how they turned out

| Game | Original target | Released | Delays | Metacritic at launch |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | 2022 | May 12, 2023 | 1 | 96 |
| Hollow Knight: Silksong | First half of 2023 | September 4, 2025 | 1, then no date for two years | 90–94 |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | April 16, 2020 | December 10, 2020 | 3 | 86 (PC), 57 (PS4) |
| Starfield | November 11, 2022 | September 6, 2023 | 1 | 83–85 |
| 007 First Light | March 27, 2026 | May 27, 2026 | 1 | 84–88 |
| GTA 6 | Fall 2025 | November 19, 2026 (planned) | 2 | Not out yet |
| Fable | 2025 | February 2027 (planned) | 2 | Not out yet |

For comparison, two big 2025–26 games that weren't delayed: Ghost of Yotei launched as planned in October 2025 and scored 86, and Marvel's Wolverine hit its September 15, 2026 date and scored 75 ([our review deep dive](/blog/2026-09-15-marvels-wolverine-review-deep-dive)).

## Why games get delayed

Games are hard to schedule. They're built by large teams out of systems that all depend on each other, and many of the most important problems only show up late, when everything finally runs together. A game can look nearly finished and still be months away from being stable, fun and fully tested.

The common reasons for a delay are:

- **Bugs and performance.** The game works, but crashes, stutters or breaks too often to ship.
- **Scope.** The team is still building content. Team Cherry said in May 2023 that it had planned to release Silksong in the first half of that year, but the game had "gotten quite big."
- **Polish.** Everything is in, but it doesn't feel right yet. Controls, pacing and balance often get their final tuning very late.
- **Platform work.** Getting a game running well on several consoles, and through each platform's certification, takes time. 007 First Light's Switch 2 version slipped again in April 2026 for optimisation.
- **Business timing.** Microsoft moved Fable from autumn 2026 to February 2027 to give it "the dedicated moment it deserves," away from a crowded autumn.

## Big delays are usually a choice for quality

When a publisher delays a major game by months, it's choosing to spend more money and miss a planned date. That's not done lightly, and it usually means the team believes the extra time will make a real difference.

Tears of the Kingdom is the clearest case. When producer Eiji Aonuma announced the delay to spring 2023, he said Nintendo had "decided to extend our development time a bit." He later explained the extra year was spent making sure "everything in the game was 100 percent to our standards." The game launched to a 96 on Metacritic.

Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick made the same argument about GTA 6. On the November 2025 investor call announcing the second delay, he said "it's always painful when we move a date," but "we've never regretted it in retrospect." Both of GTA 6's new dates fall inside Take-Two's fiscal year ending March 2027, which, as Zelnick put it, "happens to be a great release window."

## The famous quote, and who actually said it

The line most often used to defend delays is "a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad," usually credited to Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto. Researcher Kate Willaert traced the quote and found no evidence Miyamoto said it. The earliest version she found comes from a 1996 Game Developers Conference session, credited to Ellen Guon, now Siobhan Beeman, of Origin Systems. Beeman remembers the studio's motto as: "A game's only late until it ships, but it sucks forever." The sentiment was common across the industry long before it became a Miyamoto meme.

## When a delay isn't enough: Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is the counterexample everyone remembers. It was delayed three times, from April to September to November to December 2020, and still launched in such poor shape on PS4 and Xbox One that Sony pulled it from the PlayStation Store on December 18, 2020 and offered "a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store." It didn't return to the store until June 2021.

The lesson most people took wasn't that delays are bad. It was that Cyberpunk needed more of them, or a smaller scope. Reporting by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier found that many developers had urged management to delay the game further.

## What the data says about small delays

There's an important caveat to the "delays are good" story. A 2022 study by researchers at Queen's University, which looked at 23,485 games on Steam, found that 48% had a delayed release, but the median delay was just 14 days. Delayed games actually received slightly lower Steam ratings than on-time games, though the difference was negligible.

In other words, most delays are routine slips of a week or two, not a studio taking a year to perfect something, and on their own they don't predict a better game. The study also found that games given a date range, like "fall 2026," were more likely to hit it than games given an exact date.

So a delay tells you less than it seems. One long delay announced with a clear explanation, from a studio with a good track record, is usually a good sign. Repeated delays with little explanation, especially alongside layoffs or leadership changes, are harder to read.

## The human cost of a delay

There's one more real downside: a delay doesn't always mean the people making the game get more time to rest. In some studios it simply extends a period of long hours, known in the industry as crunch. In the IGDA's 2023 Developer Satisfaction Survey, 28% of game developers said their job involved crunch, and many said long hours are treated as a normal part of the job. Bloomberg reported that CD Projekt Red moved to mandatory six-day weeks in the run-up to Cyberpunk's launch, despite earlier promises not to. When we cheer a delay, it's worth hoping the extra months are good for the people doing the work too.

## What to do while you wait for GTA 6

A delay is also a gift of time. GTA 6 now lands in a crowded end of year, so use the weeks before November 19 to finish something you started or to play the games that will make the new one mean more. And if the release calendar makes everything feel urgent, it helps to remember [why so many big games land in the fall](/blog/2026-09-07-why-big-games-release-in-the-fall). Nothing has to be played on launch day.
