# The best co-op games to play with your partner (couch and online)

The best games to play with your partner are the ones built for two from the start. For a story, play Split Fiction or It Takes Two, Hazelight's two-player-only adventures. For something slower, Stardew Valley lets you share a farm (and marry each other). For noise, Overcooked! All You Can Eat. For puzzles, Portal 2's co-op campaign, or Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, where only one of you needs a controller.

Three practical questions decide most of it: are you on one sofa or in two rooms, do you need one copy or two, and is one of you much better at games than the other? Below are 12 co-op games for couples across different moods, including four from 2026, with platforms, couch and online options, rough length where reviews give one, and who each one suits. One timely note: It Takes Two comes to Nintendo Switch 2 this Thursday, October 15, as a free upgrade for owners of the Switch version, [according to EA](https://www.ea.com/games/it-takes-two/news/launching-on-nintendo-switch-2).

## Best story co-op games for couples

### Split Fiction

Hazelight's 2025 game follows two writers, Mio and Zoe, whose stories are being mined by a tech company's machine, and its levels flip between sci-fi and fantasy. It's co-op only, split-screen or online, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Switch 2. Only one of you needs to buy it: the other downloads the free Friend's Pass and plays the whole game online, with [crossplay across all four platforms](https://www.ea.com/games/split-fiction/split-fiction) through an EA account. On Switch 2, GameShare lets a second player join locally on their own console from your copy. IGN's Luke Reilly put it at 14 hours and says it works "particularly when played by people of differing skill levels," because dying costs so little.

### It Takes Two

The 2021 Game of the Year at The Game Awards is literally about a couple: Cody and May are divorcing when their daughter turns them into dolls. It runs about 10 hours per IGN's review, and each chapter gives the two characters different abilities, so nobody is stuck as the sidekick. Friend's Pass works here too, with crossplay between PC, Xbox and PlayStation (not Switch). The Switch 2 version runs at 1080p and 60fps docked.

## Best cozy co-op games to play together

### Stardew Valley

Still the default for slow evenings. Up to four can play split-screen (two on the original Switch) or online, with up to eight on PC and Switch 2, per the [Stardew Valley Wiki](https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Multiplayer). You choose shared or separate money, and you can marry each other with a Wedding Ring, which is a very Stardew way to make it official. There's no crossplay between consoles and PC, and no ending to rush toward, which suits couples with different schedules.

### Big Walk

House House's August 2026 game has no same-screen co-op at all. You talk only through its proximity voice chat, so the [developer's FAQ](https://bigwalk.game/faq) recommends separate rooms, and says that with "multiple devices and multiple rooms" you can play together at home. Nintendo Life's reviewer did just that with his wife, playing "in separate parts of the house" while their baby napped. It's on PC, Mac, PS5 and Switch 2 with crossplay, for 2 to 12 players, and IGN's group spent nearly 20 hours with it. ## Best co-op puzzle games for two players

### Portal 2

The co-op campaign is still one of the best puzzle games for two: you each play a robot with your own portal gun, split-screen or online. It's on PC, on Switch in Portal: Companion Collection (with local split-screen and online co-op), and on Xbox through backward compatibility. Writer Erik Wolpaw estimated each campaign at about six hours. It suits couples who like to stop, point and argue about where the portal goes.

### Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

One of you defuses a bomb on screen. The other reads the bomb defusal manual, which is [free to print or view](https://www.bombmanual.com/), and can't see the bomb. Only one copy is needed, on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, phones or VR. Rounds are short and loud. It's the best pick if one of you rarely plays, because the person with the manual never touches a controller.

## Best chaotic couch co-op games

### Overcooked! All You Can Eat

Both Overcooked games, remastered, for up to four chefs in timed kitchens that slide, split apart and get in the way. It's on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC, with local play, online play and crossplay. Assist mode slows recipe timers, lengthens rounds and lets you skip levels, which helps more than pride admits.

### Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch 2 Edition)

Up to four players on one Switch, and built for mixed skill levels. Yoshi and Nabbit don't take damage from enemies, and the Switch 2 Edition, out since March 26, 2026, adds Co-Star Luma, a helper who can't be hurt and can be steered with Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. A new Assist Mode makes any character immune to damage. Nintendo Life calls Luma a way "for less experienced players to get involved and help out."

### Minecraft Dungeons II

The easygoing 2026 pick. Mojang and Double Eleven's dungeon crawler came out on September 29 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Switch and Switch 2, at $29.99, for up to four players. TheSixthAxis praises "the ability to mix and match local and online players," with crossplay on top. It's short: IGN put the story at about seven hours, and Game Informer beat it in under 10.

## Best co-op shooters to play with your partner

### Gears of War: E-Day

The other big 2026 couch co-op release. The Coalition's prequel launched on October 6 for Xbox Series X/S and PC ($69.99, or on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass), with two-player split-screen on consoles and four-player online co-op. MonsterVine played the whole campaign in split-screen and says it "runs smoothly and still looks incredible." Budget the time: Eurogamer finished in 20 to 25 hours on Hardcore. ### Helldivers 2

For online play, Helldivers 2 is co-op chaos for up to four on PS5, PC and, since August 2025, Xbox Series X/S, with crossplay. There's no split-screen, so you each need a screen. Difficulty runs from level 1 ("Trivial") to 10 ("Super Helldive"), so a newer player can start low. It's a live-service game with no campaign to finish, which suits a regular night rather than an ending.

## The long one: Baldur's Gate 3

For something to play for months, Larian's RPG is on PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with online co-op for up to four and split-screen on one TV. Patch 8 in April 2025 added crossplay and finally brought split-screen to Xbox Series S. It's huge: PC Gamer's reviewer spent 160 hours. One thing to know first: you can't romance each other. Larian's explanation, quoted by [PC Gamer](https://www.pcgamer.com/baldurs-gate-3-multiplayer-co-op-guide/): "Our relationship system is designed for romancing NPCs only."

## How to pick a co-op game when you have different skill levels

This is where couples' game nights usually go wrong, with one person watching the other play. A few rules help:

- **Look for a built-in helper role.** Mario Wonder's Nabbit, Yoshi and Co-Star Luma can't be hurt, and Keep Talking's manual reader never holds a controller. A newer player can contribute without being the reason you lose.
- **Check what happens when someone dies.** In Split Fiction you respawn near your partner almost straight away, per IGN. Games that send you both back to a checkpoint are harder on a mixed pair.

- **Prefer games without a clock.** Portal 2 and Big Walk are both listed on Steam as playable without timed input. Overcooked is all clock, so save it for later.
- **Give the stronger player the harder job, not both controllers.** Hazelight's games give each character different abilities, so neither of you can simply take over.
