# Steam Next Fest October 2026: dates, how it works, and how to try demos without growing your backlog

**October 19, 2026 · Perthro**

Steam Next Fest October 2026 opens today, Monday, October 19, at 10am Pacific (1pm Eastern, 6pm in the UK) and runs until 10am Pacific on Monday, October 26, according to [Valve's Steamworks schedule](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/marketing/upcoming_events/nextfest/2026october). Every game in it is unreleased, every demo is free, and all you need is a Steam account. It's the last Next Fest of 2026. The next one runs February 22 to March 1, 2027.

The short version of how to use it: pick two or three genres or moods before you open the hub, browse the By Genre, By Theme and By Feature tabs rather than the front page, watch a developer stream before downloading anything big, and wishlist a game only after you've played its demo. Some demos disappear when the fest ends, so play those first. Below: how Next Fest works, how to find the good demos, a table of notable ones confirmed for this edition, and a simple way to keep a shortlist that doesn't turn into another backlog.

## When does Steam Next Fest October 2026 start and end?

Valve lists the October edition as running from "October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC-7) to October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT." Here's that in a few time zones. The UK and most of Europe turn their clocks back on October 25, so there the fest closes an hour earlier on the clock than it opened.

| Time zone | Opens | Closes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pacific (Vancouver, Los Angeles) | Mon Oct 19, 10am PDT | Mon Oct 26, 10am PDT |
| Eastern (Toronto, New York) | Mon Oct 19, 1pm EDT | Mon Oct 26, 1pm EDT |
| UK | Mon Oct 19, 6pm BST | Mon Oct 26, 5pm GMT |
| Central Europe | Mon Oct 19, 7pm CEST | Mon Oct 26, 6pm CET |
| Sydney | Tue Oct 20, 4am AEDT | Tue Oct 27, 4am AEDT |

Steam Scream V Fest, Valve's horror sale, starts on October 26, the day Next Fest ends, per the [upcoming events calendar](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/marketing/upcoming_events).

## What is Steam Next Fest?

Valve describes it as "a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos." It runs three times a year, in February, June and October. It began in December 2019 as the Steam Game Festival, held alongside The Game Awards, and was later renamed, [per Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_%28service%29).

The [rules for developers](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/marketing/upcoming_events/nextfest) explain a lot about what you'll find:

- **Every game is unreleased.** A game can't launch before its Next Fest ends, and each game can only take part in one Next Fest.
- **No prologues.** Prologues, "chapter 1" releases and short versions of games already on Steam aren't allowed.
- **Demos don't have to be new.** Valve sets "no requirements regarding exclusivity, newness, or length of demo," so some have been out for weeks. Northgard Battlegrounds' demo, for example, launched on October 6.
- **It isn't a sale.** The demos are free. The full games won't be.
- **There's no official Valve stream.** Valve dropped it in October 2024. Developers can stream their own demos, and those streams have their own tab.

Press have had access to the list since the Press Preview opened on October 8.

## How many demos are in Steam Next Fest?

A lot. Valve's own blurb still promises "hundreds of FREE playable demos," but recent editions have been far bigger: Brazilian site [Olhar Digital](https://olhardigital.com.br/2026/06/16/games-e-consoles/steam-next-fest-2026/) counted about 4,900 demos in June 2026, up from a little over 3,500 in February. Valve doesn't publish a count in advance, but expect thousands again. Even the niches are busy: UploadVR, working from a list Valve sent it, counts more than 40 PC VR demos.

On October 26, Valve publishes a Wrap-Up page of the most-played demos, which works as a second chance if you miss the week.

## How to find good demos in Next Fest

### Browse the tabs, not the front page

The [Next Fest hub](https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest) is split into tabs: By Genre, By Theme, By Feature, Charts and Livestreams. Valve says the first few days are "completely randomized in all locations except for explicitly named lists and personalized segments." From Wednesday, Steam uses what people have played to tailor its recommendations. So early in the week is the best time for surprises, before the shelves settle around the same popular games.

### Filter out what you don't need

The hub's browser can hide games you already own, have wishlisted or have marked as ignored (that last one is on by default). It also filters by controller support, Mac or Linux support and language. If you only play with a controller, switch that one on before you start browsing.

### Watch a stream before you download

The Livestreams tab shows developers playing their own demos on their store pages. Ten minutes of someone else playing tells you more than a trailer, and saves a big download for a game that turns out not to be for you.

### Use Charts as a check, not a guide

The Charts tab shows what's popular. It's useful for spotting the demos everyone will be talking about, and no help at all for finding a strange little game made by three people. For that, our guide to [finding hidden indie games](/blog/2026-08-22-how-to-find-hidden-indie-games) has better methods.

### Wishlist after you play, not before

Hover over any game in the hub and click the star to wishlist it, and Steam emails you when it releases. Wishlisting has a second use: developers can email their wishlisters when a demo goes live, so the games you wishlist now can tell you about their next demo too.

### Keep your own record of what you played

Steam doesn't make it easy to see which demos you've tried. Players on [Steam's forums](https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/0/4298193819413532780/) report that uninstalling a demo can remove it from your library and your licences list entirely. Before you uninstall, note what you played and what you thought.

Some demos vanish, too. Valve encourages developers to leave demos up after the fest, but it's their call. PixelJunk Monsters 3's first demo is available "exclusively during Steam Next Fest," and the Loftia, Frostrail and ArcheAge Chronicles demos are all scheduled for the fest week only. Play those first.

## How to keep a demo shortlist

The point of Next Fest isn't to play everything. It's to leave with a few games you're sure about. A simple system:

1. **Decide right after each demo.** Wishlist it, put it on a maybe list, or drop it. Don't save the decision for Sunday, when ten demos have blurred together.
2. **Write one line per keeper.** What hooked you, what would make you buy, and the release date. "Stronghold 4: Skirmish is the draw, out December 7" is plenty.
3. **Check release dates against your autumn.** Several of these land within weeks: Northgard Battlegrounds on October 27, Loftia on November 3, Cat Cafe Manager 2 on November 25. If your November is already spoken for, a maybe can stay a maybe. Our plan for [clearing your backlog before GTA 6](/blog/2026-09-28-clear-your-backlog-before-gta-6) is about exactly that.
4. **Check what carries over.** Loftia's demo progress moves into Early Access. Don't assume that for every game: check the store page or the developer's announcement.
5. **Cap the list.** If it passes ten games, cut one before adding another. The same rule works for sales, as in our guide to [picking a Steam sale game without growing your backlog](/blog/2026-07-12-pick-next-steam-sale-game-without-backlog-worse).

Your Steam wishlist is a fine place for that list to start, but it only sees Steam. In [Perthro](https://apps.apple.com/app/perthro/id6764673686), games you're watching but don't own go on an Interested list, kept apart from the backlog of games you already have, and with Steam connected you can import your public Steam wishlist into it. The app's release calendar has launch-day alerts for the games you're waiting on, so a demo you liked in October doesn't slip past in December. Our [backlog tracker](/backlog-tracker) page explains how the two lists fit together.
