Short games you can finish in a weekend

Twelve great games under 10 hours, from a two-hour hike to an eight-hour mystery, and every one worth finishing.

Not every good game needs a month of evenings. Some of the best games of the last decade take less time than a long movie marathon, and a handful of recent ones fit comfortably into a Saturday.

These are 12 short games you can finish in a weekend, all well reviewed and all available now on current platforms. Six take under four hours. The rest are games under 10 hours for a full weekend. There's a summary table at the end with lengths and platforms.

How we picked these short games

Every game here has a main story you can reasonably finish in one weekend, based on reviews and developer statements. Lengths are for a normal first playthrough, not a speedrun, and they vary with how much you explore, so treat them as ranges.

We mixed genres on purpose: puzzle games, a shooter, a platformer, a detective game and several story games. Each is available on at least one current console or PC. If you want the wider argument for shorter games, we made it in are video games too long?

Short games you can finish in an afternoon

A Short Hike

Claire is spending the summer at her aunt's ranger station and needs to climb Hawk Peak to get phone signal. It's a small, open island you explore at your own pace, gliding and climbing, and nearly every critic praised its map design and writing. It's the easiest game on this list to recommend to anyone.

Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Switch, PS4, Xbox One. Length: about 1 to 3 hours; under 6 for everything.

What Remains of Edith Finch

Giant Sparrow's 2017 story game sends Edith back to her family's strange, stacked house, where each room holds a short playable story about a relative. Every vignette plays differently, and several are still talked about years later. Play it in one sitting if you can.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch. Length: about 2 hours.

Despelote

Set in Quito in 2001, while Ecuador chases its first World Cup qualification, Despelote puts you in the shoes of an eight-year-old with a football and a whole city to kick it around. It's based on co-creator Julián Cordero's childhood, and it won the BAFTA for Game Beyond Entertainment. Short, funny and unlike anything else here.

Platforms: PC, Mac, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch. Length: about 1 to 2 hours.

Portal

Valve's 2007 puzzle game is still a near-perfect evening: a portal gun, a test facility and GLaDOS, one of the best-written antagonists in games. Each puzzle teaches you something new and then asks you to use it. If you finish it Saturday, Portal 2 is waiting for Sunday.

Platforms: PC; Switch as part of Portal: Companion Collection. Length: about 3 to 4 hours.

Mixtape

Beethoven & Dinosaur's May 2026 release follows three teenage friends on their last day together, told in vignettes set to a licensed soundtrack that includes Devo and the Smashing Pumpkins. IGN gave it a 10/10, and Metacritic scores run from 82 to 92 depending on platform. Some players felt it was too short for the price, which also makes it a perfect weekend game. Our Mixtape review roundup covers where critics split.

Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S (including Game Pass), Switch 2. Length: about 3 to 4 hours.

Inside

Playdead's follow-up to Limbo is a side-scrolling puzzle-platformer about a boy moving through a bleak, wordless world. The puzzles are clever without ever stalling you for long, and the ending is one people still argue about. Play it in the dark with headphones.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch. Length: about 3 to 4 hours.

Games under 10 hours for a full weekend

Unpacking

You unpack boxes in a series of rooms across years of one person's life, and you learn who she is from what she owns and where it ends up. There's no dialogue and no timer. It's the calmest game on this list and one of the most affecting.

Platforms: PC, Mac, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, iOS, Android. Length: about 4 hours.

Titanfall 2

Respawn's 2016 shooter is remembered for its multiplayer, but the campaign is the reason it's here. You play a rifleman paired with a giant robot called BT-7274, and nearly every level introduces a new idea, including the time-jumping "Effect and Cause." It's one of the best single-player shooter campaigns of its generation.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One (playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S). Length: campaign about 5 to 7 hours.

Keeper

Double Fine's 2025 adventure casts you as a lighthouse that has learned to walk, traveling with a bird named Twig through a surreal, post-apocalyptic world. It scored 83 on Metacritic on PC, and it came to PS5 on September 3 at a lower $20 price. It's short on challenge and big on strange, beautiful moments.

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5. Length: about 4 to 8 hours, depending on the review.

Dispatch

AdHoc Studio's superhero workplace comedy stars Aaron Paul as Robert Robertson, a former hero who ends up dispatching a team of reformed villains. It's eight episodes of choice-driven story with light management in between, and it sits at 89 on Metacritic on PS5. Watch out: it's easy to binge the whole thing in two sittings.

Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S. Length: about 8 to 9 hours for one ending.

Celeste

Madeline climbs a mountain while dealing with anxiety, and the platforming is as sharp as the writing. It's hard, but checkpoints are frequent and an assist mode lets you tune the difficulty down without judgment. The optional B-sides can wait for another weekend.

Platforms: PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox One. Length: about 8 hours for the main chapters.

Return of the Obra Dinn

Lucas Pope's detective game puts you aboard a merchant ship that drifted back into port with its crew dead or missing. You use a pocket watch to see the moment of each death and work out who everyone was and what happened to them. It's the longest game here and the most satisfying to finish.

Platforms: PC, Mac, Switch, PS4, Xbox One. Length: about 8 to 10 hours.

How to finish a game in a weekend

Pick one game on Friday and decide that's the weekend's game. Short games reward focus: most of the ones above are built to be played in one or two long sessions, and they lose something when spread across a month of 20-minute breaks.

Start early on Saturday rather than late on Friday, keep your phone in another room for the first hour, and save the longer games (Celeste, Obra Dinn, Dispatch) for weekends with a real gap in them. If weekends are packed, our guide to finding time to play games has ideas for carving out the hours.

When you finish, write down what you thought while it's fresh. A rating and two lines in Perthro takes a minute, and a short game you actually finished is a much better memory than a long one you abandoned at the halfway point.
